We are going to Japan. We're now part of 5th group, IX corps and moving to camp Drake, just outside of Tokyo. We've been training a korean battalion to take over our position. The guns and the tracks will stay. We will be taking our vehicles and other equipment. In this photo we've taken down our tents and are all packed. Our section had taken down our tent earlier and moved in with one of the gun sections. The thing I remember most of that time was one incident where one of our guys came into the tent with a grenade. He said "Look what I found up on the hill -- look, the pin is loose." Then the pin came out. Everyone became a bit nervous. "Put that pin back in!" As he tried to replace the pin he dropped the grenade. It popped and started to smoke. Everyone leaped for the two entrances. I found myself behind a rock wall outside the tent. The guy with the grenade was in the tent laughing. He had taken the charge out of it and all it did was smoke. One guy had been asleep and no one tried to save him. When he found out what had happened he would't speak to us. I believed he moved into another tent.

There was this cement monument outside the CP. It identified our battery and etc. etc. It was about the only thing left to show we had been there. I'm under the arrow having my photo taken again.

Loading up on the truck. Our battery will head south in a truck convoy. At the last minute we threw that frame on. Its used to hold a diesel barrel up off the ground outside a tent for a stove inside. We will head down to Chunchon. It will be our first night on the road. But, I won't get to sleep there. That's another story.
