One of the guns firing at night: To take this photo, I opened the lens before the gun flashed and used its light to illuminate the subject, then closed the lens. Its hard to hold the camera steady with the opening and closing of the lens. Plus there is the problem of ground vibrating because of the gun. One more problem, this was my 16mm camera so it was quite an enlargement.

The smaller photo on the right is John and Willie Hope just coming back from a week on the artillery range. We had been riding in the back of a truck. A bit dusty.

The artillery range was alongside a lake. On the days that we fired in the morning we had the rest of the day off. Almost everybody was out on the lake on their air mattresses. The water was quite deep near shore but not so we could dive in. We decided to back our 3/4 ton truck into the water and dive off the back. This was great but then the truck slowly slid away from the shore and soon it disappeared under the water. The lake was deeper then we thought. We brought up one of the tracks and someone dove down and attached a cable to the front of the truck. It was about 6 ft below the surface. The track pulled it out and the truck was fine.
