All dressed up for saturday morning inspection. We lived up the hill, to the right of this photo (about 2 blocks). We would come down for reveille in the morning and also inspection. I am adjusting the scarf on Hayes, one of the FDC guys. The guy on the right was from one of the gun sections. We had about 5 minutes before we had to fall in. The hills in the background is in enemy territory. They are most likely watching us. We had on our OG's (olive green uniform). This uniform was issued to wear under field pants and jacket for warmth. They were all wool. Someone got the idea to use them as a dress uniform. When I was first issued this uniform in Japan it was very wrinkled. When I got to korea I ironed it with a heated mess kit full of sand. After that I kept it under my air mattress to stay pressed. In this photo, we each have a carbine, bayonet and first aid pack, but it looks like we had stopped carrying our ammo with us. When I first got there we had to have with us at all times: rifle, helmet, first aid pack and ammo. The type of uniform was not important. You wore what you needed for that day. The helmet, in the winter, was worn over a pile cap without the liner. In this photo we are wearing only the liner without the steel pot. The pot was used also for carrying and heating water. In one outfit, in the morning I would pour water from a 5 gal can into my helmet, heat it on a stove, then place the helmet into a hole in a counter before a mirror and wash and shave. No electric razors. |
