On a sunday afternoon —

Sundays were usually boring. In the summer we swam in the river.

I remember one sunday, after church of course, we were down by the river. We were sitting around discussing if it was possible to get all the way down to charlie battery on an air mattress, over the rocks and rapids. One of the guys bet that he could make it. We promised we would drive down and pick him up. He took off, we sat around for awhile then we got dressed and I got my jeep. Three of us drove down to charlie battery (about a mile). We met our friend coming up the road carrying his torn mattress. In those days we swam in the nude. And of course, so was he. I'm glad no one else had stopped to ask what was he doing on the road. He lost the bet. He was not one of the ones in this photo. (dated july '54)
