Another photo of our FDC bunker. Notice my jeep on the left side of the photo. It was used to recharge the radio batteries in the bunker. By the way, FDC stands for "Fire Direction Control". It was our job to take the information from the forward observer and translate it to vertical and horizontal settings for the guns. In our "fixed position" the FDC bunker became the operations center during a fire mission. We had a forward observer post on the highest hill in front of us. We also used air observers.

The forward observer was as I said on a hill in front of us. If there had been an attack he never would been able get off that hill. One night he called down and said the whole front, on the other side was lite up and the lights were moving forward. We of course set up a fire mission and were ready to fire the guns. The voice on the OP line was quite excited. If this was an attack he was done for. The lights moved forward then all went out at the same time. We stayed on alert all night. The next day the FO reported that everything seemed quiet. The following night we heard our tanks moving up on the road across the river from us. It took them most of the night. In the morning we were told that we had tanks hub to hub along the DMZ. The tankers stayed in the tanks all day. After the sun went down they all moved back along our road. By morning they were gone. It was an interesting experience. Both sides showing what they had.
