Just got a call from Larry - in St. John's! They got in yesterday. Had clear weather up to about 8 miles out, then dense fog. They had some difficulty finding the entrance - the gap didn't show up on radar - then the city just seemed to materialize. Larry said it looked like a "fantasy city under water." At that point they could sort out the powerful range lights, got through the narrows, and tied up near the Coast Guard. Eventually the Navy escorted them to another place to tie up (apparently there were exercises going on there), and they are now rafted up with another boat that is going to Iceland.

The "fuel" problems have been sorted out and turned out to be air in the lines rather than dirty diesel fuel. Replacing a pump seems to have solved the problem, but the bleed screws on the low pressure side are stripped and shellacked in place. No more bleeding until they get new screws! So now they wait for spare parts and filters to arrive before departing for Ireland - most likely sometime this weekend. They will lay in additional provisions and top of the tanks, too. Larry estimates about 3 weeks to Ireland, then at least another week from Ireland to Norway. For the crossing, they plan to carry about 50 gal of diesel fuel, which will allow them to motor about a third of the way total and keep up speed during periods of light wind.

Sure was good to hear from him!

Cheers,
