Switzerland, 1998

We took two weeks off, before Sean was due to head back to Minnesota in July, to travel around Switzerland and do some hiking and sightseeing.  We took the train down to Geneva from Brussels and had a little trouble finding a place to stay in Geneva, but finally stumbled on a campground that had some very nice tents that could be rented.

After a very nice boat ride that took us the length of Lake Geneva, we headed for the small town of Kandersteg, hoping to finally do some real hiking in the Alps.  We found a deserted youth hostel to stay in and then headed out the next morning on a 6 mile round-trip hike to the Oeschinensee--a incredible mountain lake with sheer 1000-ft cliffs rising up out of it.  The trail climbed 1200 ft from Kandersteg to Oeschinensee and then continued up the cliff along the side of the lake to gain another 620 ft before coming to our stopping point--a small hut.  The hike was a bit grueling for our first, but the scenery was incredible.

From Kandersteg, we took the train to Grindelwald, which sits in the shadow of several awe-inspiring peaks, including the Eiger and the Wetterhorn.  The hike from the train station to the youth hostel was itself a major effort, but the view from the porch of the hostel was incredible looking directly across the valley to the North Face of the Eiger.

We took one smaller hike from Grindelwald, but our all-day hike also ended up being the most grueling of the trip.  From Grindelwald, we took the Pfingstegg tram, which short-circuited the first 1,000 ft of the climb.  We then followed a trail that was carved into the side of a cliff up a bit to a mountain restaurant where we stopped for lunch.  After lunch we continued the hike up to a point called "glacier corner", from which we could look out over a spot where three massive glaciers converged.  The hike back down to Grindelwald took several hours, dropping roughly 2,700 feet.

From Grindelwald, we traveled to the town of Saas-Fee, a small town in the next valley over from Zermatt.  In the winter, the town becomes a busy ski resort, but also offers plenty of hiking opportunities in the summer.  (Skiing is also a possibility during the summer up on the Fee Glacier).

Saas-Fee is also interesting in that no cars are allowed within the town--the only form of transportation is via small electric vehicles.  The town was crowded, but we found a cheap spot in a small hotel, actually staying in the hotel's bomb shelter!  We took a very long cable car, followed by an underground funicular, to the top of Mittelallalin (3500m) where we had lunch and took a tour through a series of ice caves cut into the Fee Glacier.

Our final hiking spot that we visited in Switzerland was Zermatt, which sits below the Matterhorn.  We did another all-day hike that turned out to be one of our longest--roughly 10 miles, climbing over 4500 feet.  From Zermatt, we climbed to Findeln, a small collection of huts, and on up towards Gornergrat, overlooking the Gorner Glacier.  Throughout the hike, we had incredible views of the Matterhorn on the other side of the valley.
