In March of 1999, Joana and I traveled to Portugal, mainly to get her visa status changed from tourist to student.  We spent some time in Lisbon, and visited Evora and Porto.

Lisboa--we started off in Lisbon, where we needed to visit the American embassy to get Joana's visa changed.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos
This is the Discoveries Monument in Belém, which pays tribute to Portuguese sea power and includes the figures of famous Portuguese navigators and explorers.

Sintra--we spent an afternoon in Sintra, which is about 28km northwest of Lisboa and includes sights like: the ruins of a Moorish castle, the Sintra National Palace and the Pena National Palace.

Evora--after visiting Sintra, we returned to Lisbon, took a ferry across the Tejo, and headed southeast to the town of Evora, in the Alentejo.  We stayed in the old center of town, which is surround by Moorish city walls.

The small Chapel of Bones, behind the altar, in the church of São Francisco.  The inscription over the entrance reads "We bones await yours".

The chapel includes the bones & skulls of 5000 people, collected by 17th century Franciscan monks from overflowing graveyards.

Porto--from Evora, we headed to the North to visit Porto, where Joana went to university.  We did a little sightseeing and visited with some friends of Joana's.
