We visited Dakota Village--a recreation of a turn-of-the-century small village, on the grounds of the Dakota County Fair.  Uncle Mike Sexton (Sean's uncle) has gotten involved in working with the folks at Dakota Village and, more specifically, working at the old print shop that they have.  Since all the Sexton brothers (Jerry, John, Tom, Jim, Mike) worked in their Dad's print shop at some point in time, Mike invited the other brothers to come out and restore some of the equipment, as well as work at the fair when the Village was open.  There are a number of now-antique printing presses that all of the Sexton boys are quite familiar with, having spent many hours running presses exactly like this in their youth.  John spent quite a bit of time fixing up the old linotype machine (invented by Otto Mergenthaler in 1886--article #1, article #2).  John is actually a licensed linotype repairman, and he and a friend completely tore down the village's antique linotype and rebuilt it.  (Giving a bit of a fright to the curator at the Village, I'm sure).

In this set of photos, we visit the Village on an afternoon that it's not open to the public, but 4 of the 5 Sexton brothers are out at the site, setting up the presses for an upcoming open house.  It's a bit rare to get four of the brothers together in one place, with the added bonus that the location is an old print shop.

Lucy very much enjoyed meeting Grandpa out at the Village, though I suspect that now she thinks that this is Grandpa's full-time day job. ;o)

The old linotype machine that John and his friend Jim Struck rebuilt and got running.  It works by casting molten lead into a full line of characters, which could then be used in old letterpresses, rather than individual hand-set type.  A big time-saver! IMG_0817.JPG (515662 bytes) John & Jim talk about how they'll use a little proof press IMG_0819.JPG (512987 bytes)
John checks the belt tension on one of the old letterpresses.  In his youth, John (and the other brothers) spent many hours at Sexton Printing working on presses exactly like this one. IMG_0820.JPG (545712 bytes) The foreman calls for some assistance IMG_0821.JPG (538501 bytes)
Four of the five Sexton brothers.  (L to R) Mike, John, Jim, Tom IMG_0824.JPG (601676 bytes) Sexton brothers IMG_0825.JPG (615389 bytes)
John searches for some type IMG_0826.JPG (562103 bytes) John, hand-setting type.  John started his own business in the 1970s, as a typesetter.  By that time, "typesetting" was all done on computers.  But the term comes from the days when typesetters would set up type by hand, character by character, then locking the type into a "chase"–a frame that was then locked into the press. IMG_0827.JPG (627935 bytes)
John is setting type into his composing stick, where he builds up a single line of text. IMG_0828.JPG (609282 bytes) In most old printshops, the bins for the letters weren't labeled–a typesetter worth his salt could probably find the letters blindfolded. IMG_0829.JPG (616023 bytes)
In the background, we can see another letterpress and an old paper cutter. IMG_0830.JPG (691660 bytes) Not sure what type he's setting.. IMG_0831.JPG (715390 bytes)
These type cases each stored a single font–e.g. 12 point Times Roman Italic.  A printshop would have a number of cabinets, each with quite a few drawers of fonts.  When John's dad Ted died, we threw out a trailerload of old type cabinets/drawers that he had.  Today, these drawers sell for $30-60 each at antique stores. IMG_0832.JPG (720623 bytes) Somewhere I have a photo of John setting type by hand exactly like this, in his early 20s. IMG_0833.JPG (671838 bytes)
