Kirby, 1999

Back to main Photo Index

We decided to get a Border Collie as a second dog and found Kirby at a sheep farm in Central Minnesota.  We brought him home in January of 1999 and he and Jack quickly became good friends.
Kirby
We didn't know what Kirby would be called until the drive out to the farm to pick him up.  He was almost a "Shep".
Enjoying new bone
Kirby quickly learns that he gets a bone when we come back from the shops.
A brief rest
Wrestling with big brother Jack is hard work!
Cute little guy

Wrestling ring
With two dogs, definitely a lot more action in the house--the living room rug was the standard spot for wrestling.

Hanging out on the couch
Kirby needed a little bit of help to get up on the couch, but enjoyed it just as much as Jack did.

Jack tolerates Riggs
Our two cats, Dudley and Riggs, adjusted quickly to the dogs.  Here Riggs sits on the edge of the couch--his favorite spot--and ignores Jack.
Fighting for a bone
Kirby learned quickly how to take bones out of Jack's mouth.
Thinking about herding
He displayed herding instincts early, often wanting to herd the cats, with Riggs being his favorite.
Snow is a new experience
Kirby loved playing in the snow--new snowfall is the best!
Playing in the yard
Fighting for a ball in the snow.
Joana on back deck
Joana watches the action from the safety of the deck.
Monster icicle
We had some ice dam problems, which allowed some pretty huge icicles to form.
Sharp little teeth
Fortunately, Kirby didn't go through much of a chewing stage.
Wrestling
Engaging in some friendly wrestling.
Joana and Kirby

Sunset over the lake
We have a nice view to the West out our front window.
Still king of the living room
Jack waits for round two.
Thinking about heading downstairs
Kirby was initially scared of the basement stairs, but finally braved them after much coaching by Joana.
Kirby and aftermath
In the living room, afternoon shadows.
Pooped
Running around inside is hard work!  Note the overturned stool.

New buddies

Little border collie
Kirby has very typical black & white Border Collie markings.
Rawhide
More bones than they know what to do with..
Did someone say "outside"?
Kirby learned quickly--his favorite words were "ball" and "outside".
Joana
Same-sized dogs
Kirby grew very quickly and soon was the same size of Jack (which didn't last long).
Half of the menagerie
