Deck Design/Construction, 2005 - ?

Back to Home Page

Our house has a lookout basement, which means that the main floor is about a ½ story above grade at the back of the house.  We have a bumpout in the kitchen, at the back of the house, with a patio door.  The bumpout is designed to exit onto a deck, but the house does not yet have a deck in the back.  (The house was built in 1997 and has never had a deck).

We've started the process of envisioning, planning, designing, and building our deck.  We're planning on doing all the work ourselves, and have no particular schedule to get the work done.

As the project progresses, we'll post documents related to the projects, as well as photos, on this page.

Use Cases

June, 2005

"Use cases" are a verbal description of how we envision using our deck.  It's important to start by thinking about what we plan on using our deck for, and this will feed directly into the high-level brainstorming and planning.  As I started brainstorming various ways to enjoy our backyard as an outdoor living space, it led to new ideas that I hadn't yet considered.

High-Level Ideas and Pictures

May, 2006

Here is an idea list (words and pictures) for things that we might make part of the deck.  At this point, I'm trying to focus on very high-level things, like the main shape and elevations/platforms.
