Sense and Sensibility tells the story of two sisters--Elinor and Marianne--and their search for love and marriage in early 19th-century England. While Elinor is calm and rational, Marianne is more emotional and romantic. The novel revolves around the men that the two sisters meet and their different approaches to dealing with rejection when they find that the two men are not what they seem.

Ultimately, Austen's messsage is that the appropriate attitude is a compromise between Marianne's and Elinor's--the middle ground between sense and sensibility.
