Transference: The Outdated Map

- Transference:
    - Process of clinging to outmoded view of reality
    - It is basis for much mental illness
    - Set of ways of perceiving and responding to world which is developed in childhood and
is inappropriately transferred into the adult environment
- When transferece is involved, we need to revise our maps
- Psychotherapy is basically a process of map-revising
- Can revise our maps only when we have discipline to overcome pain of reality
    - For such discipline, we must be totally dedicate to the truth
    - Must consider our discomfort relatively unimportant, compared to search for truth

Transference is the process of clinging to a view of reality that worked well during childhood, but is inappropriate, or outdated, in our adult life. To correct this, we must revise our view of reality, even though this is a painful process.
