The Road Less Traveled
A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth
M. Scott Peck, M.D.
Dedication to Reality
- 3rd tool of discipline is dedication to reality
- The more clearly we see the world, the better equipped we are to deal with the world
- Our view of reality of like a map that we use to negotiate the world
- The more effort we make to appreciate and perceive reality,
- The larger and more accurate our maps will be
- By the end of middle age, most people give up making maps
- They are certain that their map is complete
- Biggest problem is that maps need to be continually revised in order to be accurate
- We are always receiving new information
- Process of making revisions is painful
- This is the source of many ills of mainkind
- We generally ignore new information
- Easier to ignore or destroy reality than to revise our map
The third tool involved in discipline is a dedication to reality. We must create a map of how we perceive the world. More importantly, we must continue to assess new information and revise our world-view. This can be a very painful process.
