The Road Less Traveled
A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth
M. Scott Peck, M.D.

Escape from Freedom

- Most of us from time to time seek to avoid pain of assuming responsibility for our own
        problems
- When we seek to avoid responsibility, we try to give that responsibility to another
        individual or organization
- "Escape from freedom": in avoiding responsibility, we try to escape from our freedom
- As adults, when we are physically healthy, our choices are almost unlimited
- Basically all patients of psychotherapy share one common problem:
    - Sense of helplessness, fear and inner conviction of being unable to cope
    - They feel impotent because they have given their power away
- Must learn that adult life is a series of personal choices, decisions
    - If they can accept this totally, they become free people

When we try to avoid our problems, we give up the freedom of choosing how to order our own lives. We can become free if we accept that we have the complete freedom to choose how to create our own lives and believe that our choices are nearly unlimited.
